Cheap Regional Flights, Fast Ferries, and Decent Bus Companies

This article outlines the airlines, ferries, and leading bus companies for getting to and around the Central American nation of Honduras.

While traveling throughout Honduras and Central America via old school buses, aka Chicken Buses, is possible for getting around cheaply, regional flights and luxury buses make the trip far more comfortable, considerably quicker, and without that big of a jump in costs.

Regional Air Carriers:

Isleña - Isleña is a regional airline in Honduras run by the larger TACA group. The Bay islands of Guanaja and Roatan, as well as La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula, and Tegucigalpa are all served by the airline.

Aerolineas Sosa - This regional airline has the most flights within Honduras. Destinations include: La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa, Roatan, Guanaja, Brus Laguna, and Puerto Lempira.

Atlantic Airlines - Atlantic is an international airline in Honduras serving La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa, and the Bay Islands, as well as Guatemala, Costa Rica, Belize, and the Cayman Islands.

Airlines for Getting to Honduras:

Most international flights head to San Pedro Sula, but they also land in La Ceiba, Tegucigalpa, and Roatan.

Taca - Taca is Costa Rica’s leading air carrier and is based out of Juan Santamaria International airport in San Jose. They have flights across Central America including flights between San Pedro Sula or Roatan and Miami or South America.

Spirit airlines - Spirit recently launched service between; San Pedro Sula, Honduras and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Some lucky passengers have been able to take advantage of sales and have landed tickets for less than $80 roundtrip with taxes.

American Airlines - Travels between San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa and Miami with connections throughout the world.

Continental- Continental flies direct to Houston and Newark from San Jose and Liberia airports in Costa Rica, and Panama City, Panama. You can sometimes find a lower rate if you travel with Copa Airlines on Continental planes.

Delta airlines - The major air carrier has flights to/from their hub in Atlanta to San Pedro Sula and Roatan, with connections to Tegucigalpa and La Ceiba.

European Airlines that fly to Tegucigalpa - European airlines such as Iberia, Air France, British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa travel mostly from other connections in Central America, although sometimes directly to their main hubs.

Bus Companies in Honduras:

Hedman Alas (Tel: 504-557-3477) - Empresa Hedman Alas is considered the best bus company for foreigners in Honduras. Stations are clean, buses are on time, and standards are high. Main destinations include La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa, Tela, Comayagua, Siguatepe, Copan Ruinas, and even Anitgua, Guatemala.

Viana (Tel: 504-556-9261) - This luxury bus company travels between the major cities of La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula, and Tegucigalpa.

Ferries in Honduras:

Roatan - The Galaxy Wave is the smooth, large, fast ferry getting you between La Ceiba and Coxen Hole, Roatan in just over an hour. The ship has comfortable seats, two levels, and cafe.

Utila - The Utila Princess II is not as large or steady as the Galaxy Wave, but equally as fast. The ship runs twice daily between La Ceiba and Utila in about 1.5 hours.

Guanaja - This new service with Island Tours between the Bay Island of Guanaja and Trujillo on the mianland runs twice a week.

Puerto Cortes - From Puerto Cortes you can take the D-Express (Tel: 9991-0778) on Mondays to Placencia, Belize. The ship returns on Fridays.
